Lenormand is a system of cartomancy based on "Das Spiel der Hoffnung" (The Game of Hope), a game published circa 1799 which doubled as a standard German 36-card deck of playing cards. This deck was repurposed for fortune-telling & given the name of a famous French cartomancer who was known to use playing cards but had nothing to do with the deck & died before her name was assigned to it.
