From Toronto’s deepest electronic underground emerges a fresh approach to sonic exploration: Co-Op.
Formed by Oreste Camarra and Karim Sultan in the latter half of 2008, these two – frequently joined by instrumental collaborators – have carved out an immersive, timeless sound that stands out amongst the wave of disposable music that has come to define the current market. Inspired in large part by the energy of their own live performance, they often create improvised takes on the studio floor with Oreste working the mixer and Karim playing melodies via keyboard. The title track is an exhilarating manifestation of their process, side-chained synths joined by haunting refrains in an arrangement that captures the essence of their kinetic style. Colombia’s Derek Ruiz is first up with his remix, bringing a percussive focus to the low-end rumble that propels it through darkened, stripped-down territory while remaining true to the aura of the original. Next up is Seattle tech-house mastermind, Pezzner, with a soaring rework that enhances the throbbing qualities of ‘Peace by Piece’ with strong house rhythms, weaving his trademark abstract vocal textures into a subtle crescendo that builds to stunning effect without ever resorting to cliched techniques. Finally, ‘Somewhere Here (Live Mix)’ returns to the exquisite programming of Co-Op, a sparkling gem of multi-faceted house and techno that was recorded in one live take in their studio, viewable here. With a full-length for Thoughtless in the works and a uniquely organic performance approach, Co-Op are doing it together, one piece at a time…
