Casting processes are compared to show the relative capabilities with respect to many considerations such as: • Type and grades of metal to be cast • Weight and size of castings to be manufactured • Surface finish and the cast condition desired • Acceptable level of porosity that can be obtained • Complex shapes that can be cast in one piece without further joining processes • Dimensional accuracy desired • Thickness of casting wall • Allowable draft required • Average tooling cost • Typical order quantities
After selecting a casting process, further selection of equipment may influence the cost due to equipment costs, productivity, quality level, safety, and environmental concerns. Ultimately the final selection of a casting source depends on the technical considerations, economic considerations and equipment/infrastructure that is available within the selected manufacturing facility.
